Bihar Vidhan Sabha or the Bihar Legislative Assembly came into existence in 1937 with an initial strength of 152 members. The size of the Assembly has changed over the time at several instances.

The first Assembly Elections in the state were held in 1952, when the total strength of of membership in the was 331, including one nominated member.

At the time of the second General Elections, the number was reduced to 318. The total number again changed in 1977 when it was raised to 324.

The size of the Assembly was trimmed to 243 members when a separate State of Jharkhand was carved in Nov 2000.

The tenure of the Assembly is five years unless dissolved before that. Therefore, General Elections take place every five years.

The 243 members of the Legislative are elected by the people directly. Every year, the Assembly has three sessions, namely Budget, Monsoon and Winter.

In Oct 2010, the state geared up for Assembly elections as the tenure of the Janata Dal (United)-led government under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, elected in 2005, drew to a close.

Bihar: Two electrocuted in Dalit Basti

Sheohar, May 23: Two people, including a woman, were electrocuted at Dalit Basti early this morning when a live electric wire fell on a hut.

District Police Superintendent Ajay Kumar Mishra said that the couple, fast asleep in their hut, came in contact with live wire, which accidentally got detached from the pole due to poor maintenance of the power distribution system.
