Mullaperiyar dam controversy: 2011 sees TN, Kerala fight

Mullaperiyar dam has become the bone of contention between Kerala and Tamil Nadu since a few years. However, the face-off hotted up recently when a report by IIT Roorkee found that an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale could collapse the dam any time. If the disaster breaks out, it could cause heavy floods in villages of Kerala. Furthermore, as many as 30 lakh people could be killed by gushing water. In case of a collapse, it would affect yet another four neighboring dams leaving a dire impact on the lives and property of people.

But, on the other hand, Tamil Nadu has been maintaining a different theory behind the controversy. TN government had alleged that it's a political strategy to take away Mullaperiyar dam rights from the state, which is being benefited by them since 1886. Kottayam (Kerala), Dec 24: With the Mullaperiyar row hurting emotions among residents in both states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, there are certain vested interests who have some hidden agenda in keeping the issue alive in the public space. Idukki, Dec 24: Supreme Court appointed technical experts on Mullaperiyar Dam issue began their visit to dams located in Idukki and adjoining areas so as to give inputs for the panel to come up with a report on the much disputed issue between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.CD Thatte and KK Mehta, members of the expert panel visited the Pambala Dam at lower Periyar area and would inspect Kulamavu, Idukki and Cheruthoni dams later in the day.They are also expected to inspect the Mullaperiyar.....

It is high time to think of a new dam.In fact a new dam can satisfy the needs of both the states.The Mullaperiyar issue have to be considered as a national issue rather than an inter state controversy.
