The increasing threat posed by piracy has become a major cause of concern for the world, especially to India as it has to pass through Gulf of Aden, its major shipping route.

SAARC seeks urgent steps to protect maritime trade, security

Thimphu, Jul 22: Alarmed at potential links among piracy, terrorism and drugs trafficking in the Indian Ocean region, the eight-nation SAARC grouping today (Jul 21) sought urgent steps to combat the growing menace that can jeopardise maritime trade and security.

The escalation of piracy-related incidents in the high seas in the Indian Ocean has "posed an alarming challenge" to the countries in the region, SAARC Secretary General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed said in her inaugural address at the meeting of the grouping's.....

'Piracy activities getting closer to Indian territory'

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 1: The Southern Air Command of IAF would "add more teeth" to its capabilities to combat the menace of pirate activities, that are inching "closer" to the Indian territory, outgoing SAC chief Sumit Mukerji has said.

Addressing a farewell press meet last evening after completing four decades of his meritorious service, the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief said SAC would get new assets to reach out to the Indian ocean where the pirate activities were "reasonably close" to the Lakshadweep islands. Read More

PM arrives in Addis Ababa for Africa-India Forum Summit

Addis Ababa, May 23: On a mission to reach out to African countries, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (May 23) arrived here on a six-day visit to Ethiopia and Tanzania to step up bilateral ties and discuss ways of combating terrorism and piracy.

Singh, who arrived here in the Ethiopian capital for the Second Africa-India Forum Summit, to be attended by 15 African countries, is also expected to make a strong pitch for UN reforms.

Nairobi, Sep 29: Somali pirates have seized a Panama-flagged ship and its 15 Indian crew on Wednesday, Sep 29.Ecoterra International said the MT Asphalt Venture was seized in the Indian Ocean from the Kenyan port of Mombasa, South Africa.“Information... says a pirate group from Brava had captured the vessel and is heading towards Harardheere at the Central Somali Indian Ocean coast," the group said in a statement.Piracy had been prevailing in African nation since 1991.OneIndia.....
