Early LifeThe present ambassador of Commonwealth Games comes from a humble family in Haryana with father as a bus driver and mother as housewife.
Vijender grew up amidst relative hardship. He was inspired by his younger brother Manoj, who was a boxer and is now serving the Indian Army.
Top Indian athletes to watch at Delhi Games1985–2003: CareerVijender boxed recreationally in his childhood and went to the Bhiwani Sports Authority of India center for boxing practice, where coach Jagdish Singh picked his talent and trained him there after. He won medals in junior national competitions after which he was selected to visit several countries like Cuba for further training and competitions.
Commonwealth Games 2006In 2006 Commonwealth Games, he defeated England's Neil Perkins in the semis, where he was awarded with a bronze medal.
He went up a step higher and competed in the Middleweight (-75 kg) division at the 2006 Asian Games winning the bronze medal. It was at this time that made him qualified for 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Beijing Olympics 2008Vijender had a great start at the 2008 Summer Olympics defeating opponents that mad him reach Middleweight Boxing Quarterfinals. There he was guaranteed with a medal, the first ever Olympic medal for an Indian boxer. His boxing style, hooks and uppercut are compared by the media with style of actor Sylvester Stallone as the character Rocky Balboa in the Rocky film series.
In MediaAfter his Olympics win, Vijender emerged into the eyes of media as the medalist took part in Ramp Shows. Vijender also appeared in Salman Khan’s Game show 10 ka dum with Mallika Sherawat. Other appearances include the fourth season of the Indian dance reality show Nach Baliye with actor Bipasha Basu.
Vijender is appraised for bringing the sport of boxing back into the limelight in India. His rise to the top rank of the boxing world has been an inspiration for the younger generation and has brought more aspirants and followers to the sport.
