You could call them real life Vijayashanthi's and Malishri's, after these actors launched a blitzkrieg against crime in several movies. Concerned by frequent attacks on women its rail network, India Railway is raising a crack team of women commandos to guard long-distance express trains.

Mamata Banerjee, who has declared that passenger safety is among her top priorities, has announced 140 stations with women commandos, brewing up more security drill in the wake of the terror activities.

These women, who will be handling a series of weapons and also trained in unarmed combat and martial arts.

Despite various measures to check crime in running trains by the Indian railways, women passengers continue to be the most vulnerable lots.


Interim Railway Budget 2009-10

While incidents of looting and rail accidents registered a decline, the graph on crime against women passengers showed a steady increase over the years.

According to the figures given by the railway there had been 174 incidents of harassment of women passengers in running trains in 2008 against 199 in 2009.

It would be shortlisted women constables would probably be the first RPF (railway protection force) policewomen to undergo commando training, including learning how to handle the AK-47 assault rifle, to tackle crime on local trains.

Apart from tackling terrorists and other anti-social elements, the women trainees would also be made adept in handling exigencies like outbreak of major fire.

So guys, when you travel in train next time take care not to tease any member of the fair sex!
