Sonia, Rahul Gandhi meet Amanat's kin

New Delhi, Feb 3: Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul turned up at the single-room house owned by father of the victim of Delhi gang-rape case "Amanat" (not her real name). The Gandhis on Saturday, Feb 2 finally met the family who had sought an appointment with them seeking justice for their daughter.

Along with Congress spokesperson Renuka Chaudhary and West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra, the Gandhis reached the place around 6pm and left only after 7 pm. They discussed the issues with Amanat's father and two brothers who reportedly urged to give stern punishment to the sixth accused who might be spared as he has been declared a "juvenile".

Amanat's family is unhappy over the Juvenile Justice Board's decision that the sixth accused in the case is a minor. However, Amanat's father says he has full faith that despite him being ruled as a juvenile, he would also get sternest of punishments.

Amanat's father said he was seeking advice of legal experts on the decision of the Juvenile Justice Board but was yet to decide whether to go to court to challenge the verdict. The Juvenile Justice Board had said the sixth accused, described as the most brutal by the Delhi Police in its charge sheet, was a "minor" and this could enable him to walk free by June 4 this year when he attains the age of 18 years.

Amanat's brother said just as the central and Delhi governments initiated steps on rape cases following mass protests and agitations, there should also be efforts for awarding capital punishment for minor offenders in rape cases.
