New Delhi, Jan 17: After engaging in a week-long saga of exchanging heated and strong words against each other over the killings of soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC), some amount of sobriety seems to have dawned on politicians of India and Pakistan.
India registered strong words of protest against brutal killings and beheadings of two Indian jawans by Pakistani soldiers on the LoC. Pakistan remained in a state of denial. Since the beginning of January, soldiers on both sides of borders are exchanging bullets. Moreover, politicians and policy-makers in both India and Pakistan engaged themselves in war of words.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar had accused India of engaging in "warmongering" in the wake of strong words against Pakistan by Indian Army Chief General Bikram Singh and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"What do we see today? We see three incidents across the LoC. We see warmongering which puts the last 60 years actively back into our memory. Warmongering coming in from the other side of the border which is, I thought, the thing of yesteryears, thing that we had put behind us," Khar said at an event at the Asia Society in New York on Tuesday, Jan 15.
In her latest attempt, Khar invited her Indian counterpart Salman Khurshid for talks to defuse the LoC tension. However, India does not seem to be much interested. India has said it will be possible only after those responsible for the barbaric killings of the two Indian soldiers are brought to book.
"The only problem that needs to be resolved is the inhuman behaviour of the Pakistan forces. Talks with Pakistan are possible only after Pakistan acts against those responsible for the barbaric act. The sentiment in India is extremely sensitive. Pakistan should understand the gravity and sensitivity of the situation," Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari said.
Lance Naiks Hemraj and Sudhakar Singh were killed by Pakistani troops on Jan 8 in Poonch sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan Army regulars took away the head of Hemraj as a trophy and also mutilated the body of the other soldier.
