New Delhi, Jan 10: MIM's Asaduddin Owaisi, who is trying to abrogate the leadership of the Muslim community, seems to be stuck in the past and wants to keep his community rooted in such quicksand emotions like hate, revenge and dogmatism.
The three-term MP's statement on national electronic media reeked of self-justification and self-denial in the age of information and education.
For Asaduddin, hate speeches of his brother Akbaruddin were merely speeches "demanding religious equality" and his arrest was a conspiracy against the Owaisis. Akbaruddin has been arrested for the speeches he made during public rallies.
"This (Akbaruddin's speech) is a speech demanding religious and political equality," he told CNN-IBN channel. "What were you doing when Atal Bihari Vajpayee said in Goa 'train kisne jalayi thi?' (referring to the train burning incident in Godhra) Also what were you doing when slogans were hurled 'ek dhakka aur do, babri masjid tod do'?" he asked.
Accusing the media of being biased and prejudiced against MIM, Owaisi said, "CNN-IBN gave live coverage to the funeral of the person who said that Muslims are cancer in India," referring to the funeral of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.
According to him, the media was being unfair to his brother and the MIM by harping on the words 'hate speech' continuously. Asaduddin called the tirade against him a 'conspiracy' and said that it was the handiwork of a section of the media and right wing elements in social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. He also accused the state government of being complicit in this act.
"In one and a half years, there have been 16 communal incidents. Several Muslims have been stabbed during the time of the Bakr-id. The state government has not arrested the right wing elements who have caused this problem," he added.
Clearly, Asaduddin cannot always call himself oppressed if he wants to be the leader. A community comes forward with education and building goodwill in society. Hatred and living in the past is a bad recipe for the future.
