Protest over Delhi Gangrape; Bharat Bandh on Jan 3

Bharat Bandh called on Jan 3

New Delhi, Jan 2: The infamous gang rape in Delhi and the 23-year-old victim's tragic death enraged the people of this country to such an extent that the protesters now called for Bharat Bandh on Thursday, Jan 3. [Update: Delhi Gangrape: Lukewarm response to Bharat Bandh, Black Day]

Trying to make their agitation apolitical, protesters declared that they would not allow any political party leaders and workers to participate in the bandh. However, the leaders and party workers can join the protests during the bandh if they come without flags or placards of their party, said the anti-gang-rape protesters in Delhi.

Details of the bandh regarding transportation have not been declared yet. However, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) postponed its examinations which were scheduled to be held on Thursday.

An official circular of the university says, "In view of the Bharat Bandh called by various organisations on 3rd January, 2013, two examinations to be conducted by VTU on Jan 7 and Jan 21."

The victim of the brutal gang-rape was raped, assaulted by six men on Dec 16 and later was thrown out of a moving bus. She was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi and later was shifted to a hospital in Singapore for better treatment. After battling for her life for 13 days, the victim passed away on Dec 29.

All accused have been arrested and Delhi police are expected to file charge-sheet against them on Wednesday, Jan 2. Meanwhile, sources also informed that postmortem report of the victim will also reach soon from Singapore.

Protests have been held at different parts of the country, especially in the national capital seeking an immediate change a in the prevailing laws over crime against women. The protesters also demanded capital punishment for the six accused.
