Bangalore, Dec 27: A gynaecologist at a hospital here has been giving away newborns for adoption since 2004, reports say. Yesterday, Ashoknagar Police arrested Dr Parvin Prakash of Get Well Hospital in Neelasandra, his son and a receptionist at the hospital for selling babies.
The doctor's son Harsha was caught red-handed while he was taking Rs 20000 from a woman who was paying the sum as advance for a 20-day-old infant. During the interrogation, Dr Parvin admitted to having sold five newborns in the last eight years.
She claimed that only the infants abandoned soon after their birth have been given away for adoption. The first such case was in 2004 when Dr Parvin handed over a baby girl to one Hasheem Bhai.
Two other infants were given to childless couples in 2007 and 2008. The accused sold off a fourth baby in 2010. It is noteworthy that the state Child Welfare Committee (CWC) had once hauled up Dr Parvin for her illegal actions but she was let off at that time with just a warning.
According to investigators, the accused is totally unrepentant. Dr Parvin told the police that even her husband does not know about the sale of newborns for adoption. She claimed that the baby which she tried to sell this time was delivered at the Get Well Hospital and the mother fled soon after.
CWC officials rushed the baby to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health where a doctor said: "The baby is just 1.75 kgs. We have collected blood samples for conducting certains tests and the results are expected on Friday. Based on the reports, if there is any problem, appropriate treatment will be given."
