TDP, CPI condemn lathicharge on protesters in Delhi

Hyderabad, Dec 22: Political parties in Andhra Pradesh strongly condemned police lathicharge on students and youths protesting against the barbaric rape in New Delhi on December 17 that has rocked the nation.

Telugu Desam Party president Chandrababu Naidu, who termed the police action as undemocratic, said it was unfortunate that the UPA government was resorting to repressive measures against peaceful protesters seeking justice for the young medical student who was raped.

The former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh said the safety of women and girls were seriously compromised under the UPA rule. Naidu sought serious action against the guilty in the New Delhi rape case.

CPI state secretary K Narayana also condemned the police action against the protesters in the national cpital, which resulted in the injury of 15 minutes. He said the Centre should immediately bring the offenders to the book.

Earlier, several rounds of tear-gas shells and water canons were used by the police to disperse protesters demanding the 23-year-old gangrape victim. The police also resorted to seven rounds of lathicharge.

Various women's organisations and NGOs protested at Indira Park here demanding the Centre to take strong measures to curb atrocities on women. The protesters also vented out anger against the guilty, they said. Students also took out a separate rally on the Necklace Road. They sported black robes during the protest.
