Rape: Police attack unarmed protesters

New Delhi, Dec 22: What is wrong with Delhi Police? Why are they resorting to violence to disperse unarmed protesters who gathered in Raisina Hill on Friday morning?

Television images show many protesters were lathicharged by police. Police also used tear gas shells and water cannons on the protesters to deter them to carry on with their protest. This is for the first time, Lutyen's Delhi is witnessing such mayhem and police targetting aam aadmi.

Raisina Hill is a high security zone as it houses India's most important government buildings, including Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President of India and the Secretariat building housing the Prime Minister's Office and several other important ministries.

Two female protesters and one policemen sustained injuries in the melee.

Protests demanding justice for the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student has reached its fifth day on Friday, Dec 22. TV journalists are saying many protesters have sustained injuries after police beat them.

Currently, the victim is fighting for her life at Safdarjung Hospital. The horrific incident triggered anger and outburst across Delhi. Protesters for the last few days are protesting against authorities to end abnormal rise in violence against women in the national capital.
