26/11: Mumbai, India remember martyrs

Mumbai, Nov 26: The maximum city and the entire nation on Monday morning paid tribute to those who were killed by 10 lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists on the fourth anniversary of the 26/11 attacks. The main commemorative programme was held at Mumbai Police Gymkhana at Chowpatty where a memorial for the 26/11 has been built. [Read: 26/11: Connection b/w 2nd hand car dealers & terrorism]

Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh and others paid floral tributes to the departed souls.

Kin of security personnel who were killed and other victims along with some survivors and those who took part in the anti-terror operations were present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, security had been beefed up across the city on the eve of the fourth anniversary all the more because the lone surviving member of the terrorist gang that had attacked Mumbai, Ajmal Kasab, was hanged in Pune's Yerwada Jail on November 21. The Mumbai Police Commissioner said although there was no particular threat after Kasab's execution, the city was put on a high alert for the past week.

A peace march was also held in the city on the eve of the 26/11 anniversary. Union Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor, Bollywood actor Mahima Chaudhary and US national Kia Scherr, who lost her husband and daughter in the 26/11 attacks, took part in the rally.

Commeomoration programmes will also be held at places like Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, Hotel Trident, Nariman House and Leopold Cafe, which were targetted by the terrorists after the latter entered Mumbai by the water way.

Over 160 people were killed while 300 were injured in the dreadful terror attack lasting for 60 hours.
