3 killed in Karachi blast, 12 injured

Karachi, Nov 19: Three people were killed while over a dozen were injured after a powerful bomb went off near Imambargah on the outskirts of Karachi on Sunday evening. Witnesses and police sources said the bomb was planted on a motorcycle, which was parked at a dairy shop near Jamia Masjid-o-Imambargah Mustafa.

It is learnt that a young man parked the two-wheeler to buy something from the dairy shop and departed, leaving the bomb-laden vehicle back. The dairy shop was badly damaged in the explosion. Bomb disposal squad officials said the bomb was set off with a remote control.

Two of the victims, identified as Sajid Hussain and Azhar Hussain, were killed on the spot while the third died on the way to hospital. Many paramilitary troops guarding the Imambargah were injured in the blast.

Angry community members protested the bombing at the site after the incident. They stopped officials from entering the site and also fired in the air. A brief clash between the protesters and paramilitary forces occurred leaving two persons injured.

Later, several Shia leaders rushed to the spot and appealed for peace. They said the bombing was carried out deliberately to fuel differences between the Shi and Sunni communities. They also criticised the government and security agencies for failing to guarantee security for the common people.

Police later found that the vehicle that was used for the bombing was registered in the name of Naeem. The latter's residence was reportedly raided although the details were yet to be made available.
