Kolkata, Oct 16: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday criticised the modern pessimistic society for allowing a free interaction between men and women and also slammed the media for trying to project Bengal as a land of rapists.
Taking a dig at the modern society, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader rued that everything was becoming open today, including relations between men and women. "Earlier, parents would reprimand them if men and women held hands but now everything is done openly. It's like an open market with open options," she said.
She also blasted the media, saying the latter was busy glorifying rape. She said such tendency would not be tolerated by the people and it was time to promote positive journalism. Banerjee said this while speaking at a programme here to release the festival edition of Jago Bangla, her party's mouthpiece. Trinamool leaders, pro-TMC intellectuals and local actors were present on the occasion.
The CM alleged that a section of the electronic media was trying to malign her government by spreading wrong news and even distorting her views. According to her, news were being tampered with to serve business interests and also said that dadagiri and didigiri were the norms in some section of the media. She also threw a challenge to those who tried to influence her government, asking the latter should join politics and run the government.
She said the media was not focussing the positive side of her government and was determined to destroy Bengal's culture.
She also criticised the media for showing 'ghastly pictures' of accidents and suicides, saying they would leave a negative impact on children's minds.
