Bangalore, Oct 8: Karnataka stopped releasing water from Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu at around 8 pm on October 8, Monday.
Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said that it was not possible to release more water to Tamil Nadu. "We have conveyed this to Supreme Court by our senior counsel and this is the stand of the state government before the court," he said.
The Supreme Court heard Karnataka's plea for staying the order to release water to Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Earlier, the Supreme Court said it would review Karnataka's petition on Cauvery water sharing on Friday, October 12, after Karnataka on Monday sought a deferment. Intense protest are underway in Karnataka against the release of Cauvery river water to neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Karnataka observed a state-wide bandh on Sunday.
