Ahmedabad, Sep 19: Former Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi, who has been convicted for leading communal attacks in Naroda Patia during the 2002 Gujarat pogroms, was roughed up by inmates inside the Sabarmati Central Jail on Tuesday morning.
According to jail aothorities, Bajrangi was thrashed by convicts of the Godhra train carnage which preceded the riots and the undertrials of 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has decided to stage a dharna outside the jail against the incident.
VHP President Praveen Togadia said the Hindus were not safe anywhere in Gujarat, not even in high-security jails. Earlier, he had said that the VHP would support Gujarat riot convicts and alleged that those who had taken advantage of the communal conflict a decade ago, had done nothing to support the Hindu activists.
The jail incident took place after an ill Bajrangi had gone to the jail hospital for treatment. Some convicts of the Godhra train carnage and those accused of terrorism in Ahmedabad were present at the hospital around that time. Both groups thrashed Babu Bajrangi.
The victim, however, has not filed any complaint so far while the jail authorities refused to attach much importance to the incident. They said it was only a verbal duel between Bajrangi and the other prisoners and ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Bajrangi was recently sentenced to life imprisonment till death in the Naroda Patia riot caseBesides bajrangi, former state minister Maya Kodnani and 30 others were convicted for murder, conspiracy and rioting, besides Bajrangi. Bajrangi and Kodnani were among the main conspirators during the riots. Nearly 100 Muslims were massacred during the riot.
