'Govt afraid to take decision'

New Delhi, Sept 14: Senior minister of the UPA government, Praful Patel, has acknowledged that political leaders and bureaucrats were apprehensive about taking decisions for they felt worried that their actions would be misinterpreted and used against themselves.

Patel, the Heavy Industries Minister and a NCP leader, recently said during a businessmen's conference in Pune that things were coming to a point where nobody was feeling confident of taking a decision.

He said taking a decision implied that one was involved in some form of personal agenda and it led to a situation where everybody started suspecting each other. "Where will India end up if every politician is considered corrupt and having vested interest?" Patel asked.

The UPA government at the Centre, of which the NCP is a part, has been deeply tainted by a series of scams and allegations have been levelled that it was suffering from policy paralysis. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, found serious charges both at home and abroad of failing to lead from the front. Under such trying circumstances, acknowledgement from a top minister would undoubtedly give rise to more discomfort.
