Chennai, Sept 11: The anti-Kudankulam stir seems to be spreading to other parts of the state. Television reports suggest that the agitating protestors are laying siege the heart of Chennai, including Mount Road and other prominent areas in the city. As many as 500 people carried out a rail and road roko in protest against the Kudankulam nuclear plant.
It has been reported that the protestors attacked a city bus in Anna Salai in Chennai. The reason behind the protest spreading to Chennai is understood to be the stern police action against agitators in Kudankulam who was at the receiving end of police action. The incident also saw the death of one fisherman.
Many politicians have joined their hands to take maximum leverage out of the noise and attention the Kudankulam agitation is generating. Many protestors are courting arrest while still continuing their relay fast.
The agitators attempt to enter Marina beach area was also stopped by policemen who are keeping a strict vigil in the area. Hundreds of protestors are also seen protesting outside the beach after they were stopped from entering the area. The protestors have turned unruly when the angry mob set fire to a Gram Panchayat office in the area on Monday. The incident can only be seen as stregthening of the hard stand the anti-nuclear activists have taken.
Meanwhile, with reports coming out that the head of the anti-nuclear protest, Udaykumar is expected to surrender today. People in 20 villagers have gathered in Idinthakarai to discuss their strategy in such a situation.
On Monday, following the clashes between the police and protestors the mob had spread to Tuticorin as well.
