New Delhi, Aug 16: After the Olympic fever has drawn to an end, India's pride and silver medallist Vijay Kumar has finally managed to get due recognition for his outstanding achievement in the world of sports. After an arduous wait and proving his mettle to the world, the Indian Army has finally promoted him as Subedar Major. He has been serving in the army as Subedar with the 16 Dogra Regiment.
Vijay Kumar had earlier expressed his displeasure that he had not got a single promotion since the last six years in spite of winning numerous medals for the sport in both the national and international level. He broached the subject once again after he bagged the Olympic medal and said that he was seriously considering quitting the forces.
The matter was taken up in great earnest by the Sports Minister Ajay Maken and also highlighted the matter with Defence Minister AK Antony seeking his intervention to grant him special consideration for his feat in the Olympics.
As per latest reports, the Army Chief has now given Rs 30 lakh and a commendation medal as a reward for Kumar's brilliant achievement. Gen Bikram Singh has also rewarded other Army Olympians with awards for their achievement.
