Fire breaks out in North Block

New Delhi, Jun 24: A fire broke out today in the North Block, where important union ministries are based, around 2.20 in the afternoon. However, no casualty was reported.

A short circuit in an air-conditioner is believed to have sparked the fire in conference room no 102 which is right next to the offices of Home Minister P Chidambaram, Minister of State for Home Mullapally Ramachandran and Minister of State for Personnel V Narayanaswamy.

It being a Sunday, not many officials were present in the building at the time the fire started. Still police cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure on receiving information.

Meanwhile eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot. They brought the blaze, described as a "minor" one by the Fire Service Department, under control within half an hour.

This incident comes within days of the Mantralaya(Secretariat) in Mumbai being gutted in a spectacular fire.
