Chennai, Mar 20: In a major breakthrough in the Kudankulam row, over fifteen people have carried an indefinte hunger strike at Idinthakarai to protest against the Tamil Nadu government J Jayalalithaa's final nod for the 1,000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP).
The spearheading People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) has demanded for the immediate release of arrested people and withdrawal of Tamil Nadu's nod for the plant following with the thorough study of geology, hydrology and oceanography around the place and are concerned about the safety of the reactor.
While, Police have arrested around 210 people from Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district, as claimed by PMANE.
Speaking to presspersons, a police official in Kudankulam said that the PMANE leaders S Sivasubramanian and Rajalingom, were arrested on Monday, Mar 19. They have been charged with sedition and taken to Tirunelveli, as reported by PMANE. While Police have imposed Prohibitory orders in the area in and around Kudankulam.
"Some 5,000 women, men and children slept around St. Lourdes Church in Idinthakarai Monday night," PMANE said.
