New Delhi, Feb 10: The Supreme Court has dismissed General VK Singh's petition on age row.

The Supreme Court observed these points in the court on the Army Chief's plea.

"No scope for us to interfere. We don't doubt your honesty," said the Supreme Court.

"You accepted it. It is a matter of record. Then you became army chief," it said.

"The most vital and relevant piece is the date of birth (DoB) recorded in the UPSC form. We are not concerned with you real or actual date of birth in the current case," said the Supreme Court.

"The matter was discussed with you at the highest level and you accepted 1950," they observed.

The Supreme Court also questioned the Army Chief on why he did not correct his date of birth with the UPSC, considered to be the most important document. According to the UPSC record, the DOB of the Army Chief is registered as 10 May 1950.

The Supreme court had earlier asked General Singh to withdraw his plea or the court will pass its order.

Normally UPSC does a thorough scrutiny of details on all applications for recruitment exams etc. Shocking that they didnot notice the error in the year of birth vis a vis the matriculation certificate. Suppose, it had been the otherway round ie. his age had been written shorter in NDA form, would he have been allowed to retire in 2013. It is a pity that such an anomaly was not resolved for nearly 40 years. Even defence minister could not take a decision and the General had no other option.
