New York, Jan 28: Online censorship has become a contentious issue of recent times, as it has been seen as a move to clamp down freedom of internet users in cyber space. Following this, Twitter - a micro-blogging website has seen ragging tweets under various hashtags over the days. However, on Friday, Twitter's new censorship policy turned its own users to protest against it.

Youngsters, activists, even politicians and people in vivid fraternity chose twitter to share their thoughts and ideas with millions, instantly. Interestingly, Friday's trending topic was #twitterblackout.

Twitter recorded growing number of users under hashtag #twitterblackout. Users across the world were irked by the new twitter policy to take down tweets that are deemed as illegal according to the local laws.

On Friday, the micro-blogging company announced to selectively censor tweets on a country-by-country basis, thus comply to one's local law. This move kicked off a twitter-war, as users threatened to boycott the site and to quit if it was applied.

Though the Twitter sought an opportunity to explain its stand on the ragging censor issue, users showed no sign of tolerance to indulge in debate and settle down. They threatened to call it quits, in case the twitter carried out the proposed policy.

The five-year-old quirky little web tool may risk the number of users if it dare to undermine its consumers' demand as there weren't many alternatives on table.

However, the said policy would receive an appreciation by Indian government since the latter kept pressing for online censorship, and was in talks with social websites to screen the contents and weed out those which alleged to be "illegal" or "obscene" according to Indian laws.
