Jaya Govt sanction funds for promotion of sports

Chennai, Jan 28: In a fillip to sportspersons in the state, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced a slew of measures with a total investment of over Rs 40 crores, including construction of new complexes for hockey and athletics.

Jayalalithaa approved Rs six crore each to set up a hockey ground of "international standards" at Madurai and an eight-track synthetic athletics facility at Tiruchirappally, an official release here said.

At Madurai, the hockey ground will also be equipped with synthetic turf, floodlights and other modern facilities and the effort at Tiruchirappally was aimed at promoting athletics, the release said.

Further, basketball courts with modern facilities will come up at Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruchirappally at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore while Jayalalithaa approved Rs 6000 each for over 3200 sportspersons with potential to make them win laurels in international competitions, the release said.

Among others, she allocated Rs 30 crore for construction of indoor stadia with audience amenities and other facilities in 20 districts of the state. The work will initially be implemented in five districts with an investment of Rs 7.5 crore.

Chess: Harikrishna beats Nyzhnyk to stretch lead

Wijk aan Zee, Jan 25: Asian champion P Harikrishna put up another sterling show to beat Illya Nyzhnyk of Ukraine and stretch his lead to a full point after the end of the ninth round of the 'B' group of Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Taking his tally to an impressive seven points out of a possible nine, Harikrishna made his tactics work again and Nyzhnyk had no clue what hit him in the finale. The victory also took Harikrishna's performance rating above 2800.....

Punjab: Coaches beat athletes for complaining about food

Ludhiana, Jan 23: Athletes from Madhya Pradesh were beaten blue and black by their coach for complaining against the poor quality of food.The athletes were beaten during the ongoing 57th National School Athletic games.  According to the athletes, Dipendra Thakur and Vijay Sharma, both the coaches punched and kicked them when they went to them to complain about the poor quality of food.Komal Rama, one of the participants said that both the coaches were under the influence of alcohol when the incident.....
