J&K: Army, BSF men swept away in massive avalanche

Kupwara, Jan 24: An avalanche has hit Furkian Gali in Kupwara district in Northern Kashmir at around 7:10 am. The tragic incident saw five Army men and two personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) being swept away in its impact.

Special teams have been rushed for rescue operations. Army sources claimed that avalanche rescue teams have been dispatched to rescue other jawans trapped in the thick sheet of snow. This is the first major avalanche reported in this season. Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under the impact of the cold weather with the state being cut off from the rest of the country due to the heavy snow fall. The cold wave was extreme this time around.

130 people evacuated from snow-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu, Jan 18: Over 130 people have been evacuated from the snow-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir following reports of trapped people and damaged houses due to heavy snowfall in upper reaches of the region. "We have conducted several evacuations from various snow-bound areas in Ramban district and shifted 28 families to a safer area," SP (Ramban) Anil Magotra said. The snowmen have propped up across the city here as residents were left with little to do with roads blocked due to snow.
