Tirupati airport to go intl soon

Tirupati, Jan 19: Tirupati, one of the holiest shrines in India will soon boast of an international airport, said Francisco Sardinha, Parliamentary Estimates Committee Chairman on Wednesday, Jan 18.

The step came after international flights began operating from Renigunta Airport, Tirupati.

According to Sardinha, night-landing facility will also be available at the airport starting from Feb. He further said that since the religious place receives around 60,000 pilgrims every day, the night landing facility will only enable more pilgrims to visit the place.

At present, only five flights are operated from the airport at Tirupati. The Parliamentary standing committee also explored the option of developing the airport after they visited the place.

VP Agarwal, Airports Authority of India chairman, said that the estimated cost of the airport could go up to Rs 360 crore. The government in order to develop the airport has agreed to acquire 400 acres of land.

"The government will release Rs 100 crore for the acquiring of land," said Chinta Mohan, Tirupati MP.
