Online censorship: Why are Google, Wikipedia protesting?

Washington, Jan 18: Search engine giant - Google and online encyclopaedia - Wikipedia decided to protest the Internet bills which have been proposed by the US government to uproot online piracy. US Congress' proposed internet bills irked Google and Wikipedia ensuing protest in its unique style.

While Wikipedia went dark completely on Wednesday, Jan 18, the search engine giant in its US homepage put a black box on its logo. Meanwhile, many other popular websites in the US also decided to agitate, but not with violence.

US Congress' proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) irked Google, Facebook, Yahoo which are based on entries from outside sources. [Read: What is SOPA, PIPA]

However, reacting to Wikipedia's decision to "go dark" on Wednesday, Jan 18, popular micro-blogging site Twitter's CEO Dick Costolo had lashed out at the online encyclopedia's move calling it 'foolish' and 'silly'.

New Delhi, Jan 11: With internet firms facing censorship issues in India, the Delhi Police was issued a notice by the Delhi High Court based on a petition filed against summons issued by a trial court to 21 websites, including Facebook, Google, Yahoo and YouTube, for allegedly hosting obscene and derogatory content.Both Facebook and Google were issued a summons by a trial court and they had approached the High Court opposing the same.
