Arunachal to host National Weightlifting championship

Itanagar, Nov 4: Arunachal Pradesh is all set to host the National Weightlifting Championship beginning from November 21, Arunachal Weightlifting Association (AWA) announced here today (Nov 4).

The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) joint secretary and AWA president Abraham K Techi today said preparations were going on full swing for event and informed that the weightlifting sets are being procured from Osaka, Japan while the trophies, medals and mementos from Taiwan to make the championship the best.

While all states and union territories besides the Railways are expected to take part in the event, coaches from the services are expected to arrive here by November 15. "The state would be lucky to witness a host of international medalists, like Karnam Malleswari, the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in the sport in 2000, another former top weightlifter Kunjarani Devi besides a host of Arjuna awardees during the championship," Techi disclosed. The state will host the event for the first time.

Weightlifter Chanu fails dope test, faces life ban

New Delhi, Sep 14: One of the most successful women weightlifters in India, Sanamacha Chanu confronted life ban after her 'B' sample test chucked out as dope positive.The 'A' sample of 31-year-old Chanu, who won  Arjun award in 2000, was taken during the trials for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in Aug 2010 had tested positive for methylhexaneamine."Chanu's 'B' sample had also come out to be positive for methylhexaneamine. We have sent the notice to Chanu and Indian.....

Sports sex scandals: Gill assures impartial action

New Delhi, Jul 26: The Sport Ministry has promised to deal with the sex scandals in the fields of hockey and weightlifting in an "impartial way".“The Ministry will do what it has to in a professional and impartial way," Sports Minister MS Gill on Monday, Jul 26 told reporters outside the Parliament.Sports Ministry is keeping a tab on the developments in the sexual harassment cases of the two sports, he informed.Both the coaches of the sports accused.....
