India sign off Commonwealth Wrestling C'ships on high note

 Chandrakant Mali won three gold medals
New Delhi, Oct 15: Indian lifters signed off their campaign in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships on a high note by adding as many as nine more gold medals on the fifth and final day of the event in Cape Town.

Apart from nine gold, India also bagged six silver medals yesterday, to return home with a whopping 110 medals, including 53 yellow metals, from the championships. Chandrakant Mali won three gold medals in the senior men's 105kg category with a total lift of 338kg.

Vompu Prabhakar then equalled the feat in the junior men's 105kg with a total lift of 303kg. Nitin Kumar Rawat, however, had to be satisfied with three silver in the junior men's 105kg with a total lift of 285kg. Sandeep Kumar also bagged two gold medals in +105kg senior men's category by lifting 197kg in clean and jerk and with a total effort of 338kg. He also won the silver in snatch (141kg).

Rupinder Singh pocketed the last gold medal for India in senior men's +105kg snatch event with an effort of 153kg. He also won silver medals in clean and jerk (184kg) and total (337kg) categories. In all the weight categories, three medals are awarded in each of snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift.

Sports sex scandals: Gill assures impartial action

New Delhi, Jul 26: The Sport Ministry has promised to deal with the sex scandals in the fields of hockey and weightlifting in an "impartial way".“The Ministry will do what it has to in a professional and impartial way," Sports Minister MS Gill on Monday, Jul 26 told reporters outside the Parliament.Sports Ministry is keeping a tab on the developments in the sexual harassment cases of the two sports, he informed.Both the coaches of the sports accused.....

IWF Secretary, Sahdev must be sacked: Malleswari

Noida, Jul 26: 2004 Sydney bronze medallist, Karnam Malleswari, demanded the sacking of Indian Weightlifting Federation Secretary Sahdev Yadav for not paying heed to her complaints against coach Ramesh Malhotra, who has been suspended on charges of sexually harassing junior lifters.Malleswari said Yadav has to be shown the door so that coaches like Malhotra are never appointed."Suspending the coach is not enough. The Federation secretary should also be sacked because he didn't act against Malhotra despite repeated complaints. If.....
