Twitter wins ownership of "Tweet" trademark

Twitter Retweet Club
London, Oct 13: The term "Tweet" has become a registered trademark of online social networking and microblogging service Twitter.

The site has settled the long term legal battle over ownership of the word using by US advertising company Twittad, as reported by The Telegraph.

The Twittad was the first company to claim the ownership of the word "Tweet" when it trademarked the phase "Let Your Ad Meet Tweets". But later the company argued that because of Twitter's own users had come with the term for which the company had approached the court to seek ownership.

Earlier, James Eliason, the chief executive of Twittad had said that Twitter had agreed to withdraw a lawsuit against his company. The proposed lawsuit had demanded Twittad to stop obtaining trademark of the word. In support to drop the lawsuit, Twittad, based in Des Moines, Iowa, would transfer its registered trademark of "tweet" to Twitter, James added.

Spokeswoman for Twitter, Lynn Fox said in a statement, "We've arrived at a resolution with Twittad that recognizes consistent use of Tweet while supporting the continued success of Twitter ecosystem partners like Twittad."

However, Twittad executive denied to reveal whether Twitter had reached a paid settlement with his company by terming the agreement as confidential.
