London, Sept 30: Internet search and cloud computing giant google's social networking site may emerge as a new competitor in the segment of social networking as the number of visitors to the site has grown by 1,269 percent.
Web traffic firm Experian Hitwise revealed that the rapid growth was marked after Google+ invited users to join without an invite from the site.
"Opening access created a massive spike in market share of visits for the site, with a 1269 per cent growth from the week ending September 17 to the week of September 24," said Director of Research at Hitwise, Heather Dougherty.
"In just one week, Google+ went from ranking as 54th most visited site in our Social Networking and Forums category to eighth place," Dougherty added.
Experian reported that Google+ had 14,977,469 visitors in comparison to Facebook's 1,758,098,904. This statistics shows that Google+ has to go a long way to to reach Facebook's level.
However, if Google+ continues such rapid growth, it can overtake established social networking sites like MySpace and LinkedIn in no time.
