London, Aug 9: It was a scene that was unseen of or unheard of in UK in recent times, with violence spreading across London and other parts of the city, widespread rioting and arson was reported in various parts of the Britain in the third consecutive day. Media has reported it as the worst riots in decades.
Television images show huge fire and violence in parts of London. Incidents of looting was also reported here. Violence was also reported from Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol. According to a statement from the Scotland Yard, close to 225 people have been arrested and 36 people have been charged for the massive riots in London.
Massive police force have been deployed in the area and an extra 1700 officers are keeping vigil in the capital. The City of London police and British Transport Police along with other police forces from other parts of the city have joined the effort. The police have called the perpetrators of the crime, "opportunistic criminals".
British PM David Cameron cut short his holiday and flew back to London in the turbulent times the country has been witnessing. The emergency situation have been put in place for the third day after the cases of violence continued unabated.
The violence kicked off when a 29 year old man was shot down by police on Saturday in Tottenham following a peaceful protest. The protest soon got out of hand resulting in arson and violence with buildings been ransacked and rampaged by youth. More than 100 people were arrested by police officials.
Commander Christine Jones of the Metropolitan police has been quoted as saying, "The Met will ensure that those responsible will face the consequences of their actions and be arrested."
