Kalka rail accident: UP's Fatehpur becomes a dead (63) zone

Fatehpur/UP, Jul 11: Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh has suddenly become a dead zone after 15 bogies of Delhi bound Kalka express derailed on Sunday, Jul 10. Death toll mounted to 63 on Monday and at least 250 critically injured passengers were under medical treatment in a local hospital.

SP Fatehpur, Ram Bharose said, "63 bodies, including that of a Swedish national, have been recovered so far. About 250 are undergoing treatment at a hospital here."

MoS Railways Mukul Roy announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kins of the deceased; Rs 1 lakh to the people with critical bruises and Rs 25,000 to the passengers with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, 167 passengers, who survived the mishap due to the derailment, arrived at the New Delhi railway station on Monday. These passengers were brought to the national capital in a special train from Uttar Pradesh.

The mishap occurred 65 km away from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The train was travelling at a speed of 110 km/hr at the time of the accident. Sources claimed that the train derailed following the sudden use of emergency breaks. Experts however rejected the claims citing it was impossible for 13 bogies to derail over applying emergency breaks.

Central railways have asked for a minute investigation to find out the real cause of the accident. Meanwhile, another massive rail accident (Guwahati-Puri Express) on the same day extended the jittery of the railway officials.
