Kanpur jail starts video conferencing of trials

Kanpur, Jul 9: Kanpur District Jail has become the first prison in Uttar Pradesh to launch video conferencing facility for hearing cases.

Those accused of petty crimes or against whom a charge sheet has not been submitted in court will be brought before a magistrate for questioning through video conferencing, Rudresh Narayan Pandey, Superintendent of Jail, said.

A video camera, big screen and computer have been installed in the prison and Kanpur District Court for the purpose, he said.

However, inmates who are accused of heinous crimes or whose cases are already being heard by the court will not be brought forward through this method, he said. The trial phase will be conducted on Sunday with the cases of five accused being taken up, he added.

Major fire engulfs chemical factory in Kanpur

Kanpur, Mar 21: A major fire today broke out at a chemical factory here destroying property worth several lakh rupees, officials said.

The blaze engulfed the ink and colour factory at the Dadanagar Industrial area at Panki at around 4 am, SP(city) Kushhar Saurabh said, adding some chemical drums kept at the factory also exploded due to the fire.

As the blaze started to spread to other parts of the industrial area, atleast 16 fire tenders were pressed and.....

Unnao rape victim dies after 16 days of battle

Kanpur, Feb 25: 16-year-old Poonam, who was raped in Kanskheda village in the district 16 days ago, has died at Lucknow medical college, police said on Friday, Feb 25.

"Condition of Poonam was stable when she was sent to Lucknow for a surgery on Feb 21," Principal of GSVM Medical College Dr Anand Swaroop said.

"I am not aware of the reasons behind her death. If any probe has to be conducted in Poonam's death then the doctors attending her there.....

Young couple commits suicide in UP

Kanpur, July 24: Failing to stand daily family disputes, a couple committed suicide by consuming poison here. Vijay Kumar (25) and his wife Sudha Soni (20) ended their life by consuming 'sulphas' yesterday. They had celebrated only a year of their marriage, police said.
