Free Assam activists, says Team Anna

Anna Hazare
New Delhi, Jun 27: The members of civil society group India Against Corruption (IAC) on Jun 26 demanded that the activists arrested in the protest that was held in Guwahati, Assam be released.

“India Against Corruption, Delhi, strongly condemns such high-handed, brutal and undemocratic actions of the government and requests all citizens to join hands to oppose the government"s grave misconduct," said the statement from IAC.

"Gogoi and Mukut must be immediately released by the government, an apology issued, and the police officers responsible for the arrests disciplined," it said.

RTI activist, Akhil Gogoi who led a rally against the government for the eviction of people around hill areas was arrested with Mukat, office secretary, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) under several charges - most of them non-bailable, on Jun 24 from the Guwahati press club.

The rally in Guwahati led by the RTI activist turned violent after police stormed in and lathicharged the protestors killing 3 people including a minor on Jun 22.

"This is an example of the type of criminal behaviour by the government that is alienating the people of the Northeast and giving rise to and fuelling armed rebellion by various groups," said the statement.

IAC further said that the Gogoi was arrested when he was briefing the media on how some people from the Youth Congress and some unknown people in the crowd burned down the vehicles during the protest.

"Instead of arresting the real culprits, the government arrested the very people who raised their voices against state crime, maladministration and corruption in the public distribution system in Golaghat district," added the statement.
