Assam: RTI activist Akhil Gogoi arrested

Guwahati, Jun 24: RTI activist, Akhil Gogoi who led a rally against the government for the eviction of people around hill areas has been arrested under several charges - most of them non-bailable, on Jun 24 (today) from the Guwahati press club.              

Akhil Gogoi was arrested for the violence that took place in the protest rally led by him on Jun 22 in Guwahati. He is the leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti.

3 state buses and 150 private vehicles were damaged in the police-mob clash.

The rally in Guwahati led by the RTI activist turned violent after police stormed in and lathi charged the protestors killing 3 people including a minor on Jun 22.

Tear gas shells were fired by the police to control the violent protestors. Calling Akhil Gogoi a "political man in the garb of a social activist", Chief Minister, Assam, Tarun Gogoi had earlier said that the RTI activist had a “hidden political agenda".

China changes its decision to divert Brahmaputra's course

New Delhi, Jun 17: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has been affirmed that China was not diverting the course of the Bramhaputra. Asom-Arunachal heading for worst flood

Guwahati, Jul 26: Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are heading for the worst flood in recent times as more rains are expected in the next seven days, while Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level throughout the 850 kms long course. It has left trail of devastation in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh and Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lkahimpur, Tinsukia and Sivsagar district of Assam.
