Barack Obama supports Gay Marriage

Barack Obama
New York, Jun 24: Amid speculation over the debates on legislation to legalise gay marriage in New York city, the United States President Barack Obama extended his support to gay couples by saying that they deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in US.

"I believe that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country," Obama said.

Even though President backs the gay marriage, he said his views are only "evolving" and now he supports civil unions, not same-sex marriage. He urged the gay and lesbian donors for patience as the progress will be slower than expected.

Obama, who is running campaigns for the 2012 Presidential election, added that he was confident that there will be a day "when every single American, gay or straight or lesbian or bisexual or transgender, is free to live and love as they see fit."

Obama applauded New York lawmakers for the ongoing debates over gay marriage. He described the move as "exactly what democracies are supposed to do."
