Punjab govt releases Rs 45 cr for flood protection

Chandigarh, Jun 20: The Punjab government has released Rs 45 crore as part of its arrangements to meet any situation that may arise due to floods during the ensuing monsoon season.

Directions have been issued to authorities in the state to keep a strict vigil over the situation, Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management minister Ajit Singh Koha.

Vulnerable areas should be earmarked for works on the priority to save the life and property from floods, he said, adding that field staff will personally supervise these works. The Minister further said laxity would not be tolerated at any level.

Disasters claimed 250,000 lives in 2010: Moon

UN, Feb 10: United Nation's Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has said that more than 2,50,000 people succumbed to natural disasters in 2010. Mr Moon said it while addressing the informal debate in UN General Assembly.

Warning that such disasters could also make 2011 as deadly as 2010, he said, "we have already seen grievous disasters in Australia and Brazil."

Recounting the disasters, he said, "Barely a day went by without lives devastated, homes demolished, people displaced, and carefully cultivated hopes destroyed,".....

Cyclone Yasi wreaks havoc Down Under

Melbourne, Feb 3: Tropical Cyclone Yasi jolted Australia's northeastern region, causing moderate damage and no deaths or fatal injures, reports said. Yasi ripped through Queensland coast, which is already reeling in floods, early on Thursday, Feb 3, whipping up winds of 180mph and waves of up to 30ft.

Yasi listed as category five monster cyclone struck the region, where an estimated 40,000 people live in. However, luck coupled with good disaster management planning saved the lives of thousand of people......

Flood toll reaches 34 in Bengal; 5.3 mn affected

Kolkata, July 10: The death toll in south Bengal floods climbed up to 34 today as 5.3 million people continued to be affected in five districts even though the overall situation marginally improved. ''The overall situation has improved slightly and the river waters in two Midnapore districts have started receding.
