Mild quake rocks Delhi; no damages

New Delhi, Jun 20: After news of the impending monsoon showers reaching the capital Delhi, there was a not-so-expected earthquake that Delhiites had to witness on Monday morning. Though, the mild 4.6 quake on the richter scale did not cause any casualties or damages.

The tremors were felt in certain parts of North India including New Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh at 11:57 am. The epicenter of the quake is considered to be Uttarakhand's Chamoli region. According to officials, the quake was felt for a few seconds.

With the monsoon yet to unleash its complete fury in Delhi and adjoining states, the quake has raised fear among citizens there. The last such earthquake was experienced in Delhi on Apr 4 with the epicenter of that quake near the Indo-Nepal border measuring 5.7 in the richter scale.

Japan overlooked tsunami hazard to nuke plants

Tokya, June 1: Japan underestimated the tsunami hazard to encourage nuclear power plants as told by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Wednesday, June 1.

The IAEA also suggests that the plant designers should evaluate and protect against the risks of all natural hazards.

"The tsunami hazard for several sites was underestimated," the U.N. nuclear safety team said.

Indonesia rattled by tremors; 6.2 magnitude quake reported

Sulawesi Island, Apr 25: Fresh tremors were felt in parts of eastern Indonesia as a strong earthquake hit the area early Monday. Though there are no reports of major casualties, there were damages to buildings and houses. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 6.2 magnitude quake that struck the southeastern tip of Sulawesi island. The initial quake was followed by three aftershocks.

Moderate intensity quake jolts Nicobar Islands

Port Blair, Jul 26: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck India's Nicobar Islands early this morning. But there were no reports of casualties or property damage, disaster control room officials told sources today. The tremor was focused at 07.4 degrees north latitude and 92.3 degrees east longitude, the release added. According to reports from Car Nicobar and Great Nicobar islands no islander felt the quake which was recorded.....
