Wardha, Maharashtra: Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi's glasses have been found to be missing from Sevagram Ashram, Wardha since Nov, said officials.
A probe has been ordered into the case. The employees of the ashram were told not to speak on the issue of missing spectacles said Ashram President, MM Gadkari.
"We had made a list of the belongings of Gandhiji that were placed in the hut where he used to stay," said Gadkari.
"Somehow, the glasses were not included in the list. Those who cleaned the hut took a few days to realise that the glasses are missing," he said.
"We have not received any theft or missing complaint," said M.G. Nale, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Wardha after the ashram authorities failed to register a compliant.
"I met with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan as soon as I came to know of the missing glasses. He immediately ordered a high-level inquiry into it," said Rajendra Mulak, guardian minister, Wardha.
When questioned on why no complaint was registered, Gadkari said the issue will be sorted out after meeting a board of trustees. Gadkari further said that few days back a social activist gave a visit to the ashram and there was a possibility that the activist might have found out that the glasses were missing.
"Gandhiji's other belongings are, however, intact," said Gadkari.
Mahatma Gandhi went to Wardha in 1936 and started staying at the ashram which is visited by around 300,000 tourists every year.
