Journalist's murder: CM seeks quick probe

Mumbai, Jun 12: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today (June 12) directed Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik to arrest the culprits responsible for the murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey at the earliest.

Dey, who was working as an investigative editor with Mid-Day, was shot dead by unidentified assailants here.

The Chief Minister today held an emergency meeting at his residence, and took stock of the investigations, official sources said.

State Home Minister R R Patil, Police Commissioner Patnaik, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Rajnish Seth and several senior government officers were present at the meeting.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Home Minister R R Patil said that necessary measures would be taken by the government to protect the journalists.

He also said that special police teams have been constituted to arrest the culprits in the present case. Adequate security will be provided to Dey's family members, official sources said.

Srinagar, Jun 12: A Congress leader, who was booked for allegedly assaulting a lawyer here, has been arrested on charges of attempt to murder, official sources said today (June 12).District president of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Zahid Jan was arrested from the house of a senior party leader near Srinagar Airport during a midnight raid, the sources said.Police had registered a case under sections 392 and 307 RPC (attempt to murder) against Jan for allegedly assaulting Advocate Nazir Ahmad Malik.....
