NCP demands President's Rule in Meghalaya

Shillong, Jun 3: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today (June 3) demanded imposition of President's Rule in Meghalaya, attributing it to complete "lack of administration and governance".

After meeting Meghalaya Governor R S Mooshahary at Raj Bhavan here, NCP Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma said, "There is a complete collapse of administration and governance in the state due to in-fighting within the Congress which heads the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government due to leadership issue."

"Developmental activities have come to a grinding halt due to lack of governance," he alleged.

Sangma said the people of Garo Hills have been facing enormous hardship, as they were hit by the recent natural calamity, where houses and plantation were raised to the ground with no public representatives from the government attending to the problem.

"For the last few days, not a single cabinet meeting was held and the ministers were busy shuttling between Meghalaya and New Delhi over the issue of leadership," he said.

While rejecting the government's report on the affected people due to natural calamity in Garo Hills, Sangma said in Phulbari area about 600 houses were destroyed and plantation including rubber, jackfruits, fruit trees and crops were completely destroyed and the state government has failed to provide relief to the people.

He said the state government should come forward with a special package to help all those affected.

Sangma also said that the Governor informed him that there was no problem within the coalition partners of the Congress-led UPA government, but reiterated that the political issue should be solved democratically within the Congress party, lest the people suffer.
