Maharashtra to pay Rs 10 crore for Ajmal Kasab!

Ajmal Kasab
Mumbai, May 23: It seems like Maharashtra government alone has to bear the burden of keeping the country's biggest terrorist safe in custody. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) asked for Rs 10 crore from Maharashtra government as a reimburse expense on guarding 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

Making another 'attack' on Mumbaikars, RK Bhatia, ITBP Director-General, sent a request to the state government asking Rs 10.87 crore for expenses incurred between Mar 28, 2009 and Sep 30, 2010. Maharashtra government officials confirmed that they had received the request from ITBP.

Since Mar 2009, around 200 heavily armed ITBP commandos were guarding Ajmal Kasab round the clock in the jail. In 2010, Maharashtra government asked Centre to extend the ITBP commando service to guard the Ajmal Kasab, who was arrested after the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Anyhow, Maharashtra government plans to write to ITBP describing it's unfair to ask the state government to bear the burden alone as it was a national issue.

"We are in the process of writing to them. We will explain that 26/11 terror attacks are not only an issue limited to Maharashtra but a national issue," said Medha Gadgil, principal secretary, Home.

"What Kasab and his associates did is an attack not only on Mumbai but an attack on India and it is unfair to ask the state government to bear the burden (for ITBP guarding Kasab)," another senior Home department official said.
