Tokyo, May 2: The online games giant Sony apologized to 77 million PlayStation Network customers for the security breach that happened after the hacking attempt on PlayStation Network and Qriocity.
During the press conference in Tokyo on Sunday, May 1, Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony's computer entertainment division and two other executives bowed repeatedly and apologized to PlayStation customers, whose personal data including PSN password and credit card details may have been stolen by hackers.
"We apologise deeply for causing great unease and trouble to our users," Kazuo Hirai said.
"This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry. These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber security," Kazuo Hirai added.
Sony officials said that the company will restore both the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Home and PSP in this week and the Account management will also be back online in the coming week. Kazuo Hirai said that Sony had asked FBI's cyber crimes division to investigate the outage.
As a damage control tool, Sony announced 'Welcome Back' program to PSN users. According to the new program, every PSN user will get a free month of PlayStation Plus. Selected PlayStation entertainment content will also be offered free to some of the PSN users.
