In Rajasthan, a generation wiped out for monetary gains

Rajasthan
Jaipur, Apr 18: In yet another shocker that has emerged from Rajasthan hospitals, the news could numb your senses and leave you speechless on the blatant violation of basic rights. Recent reports on how women were operated upon for removal of their uterus' for no apparent reason, grabbed headlines. The facts were revealed in a RTI enquiry that gave away the sickening fact.

The act carried out in a private hospital for monetary gains charged the hapless women aged below 35 years somewhere between Rs 12,000- 14,000 for the surgery. The RTI claimed that doctors conducted operations on 385 women over the last 6 months of which 226 had their uterus removed between Mar 2010 and Sept 2010.

With the state government banning the tainted doctors who were involved in the heinous crime, the five doctors have gone on strike against the treatment meted out to them. The hospitals that are under the scanner are Sri Balaji Hospital, Vijay Hospital and Madan Nursing Hospital. These hospitals are part of the government scheme Janani Suraksha Yojna that offers Rs 1400 to expectant mothers.

The women who are relatively young belonged to backward communities like SC, ST or the OBC categories. The hospitals have however washed their hands off on any such controversy saying that they were forced to treat them due to the absence of gynecologists.

This news comes right after Rajasthan had witnessed another gross case of medical negligence, when 12 preganant women died after being infected with contaminated Intravenous (IV) fluids.
