Thomas appointment on basis of documents received: Chavan

Prithviraj Chavan
Mumbai, Mar 22: Under attack from the Opposition over his role in the appointment of PJ Thomas as the Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today said Thomas was appointed on basis of documents received from Kerala Government.

"Thomas was appointed on basis of documents.. There is no question of misleading anyone," Chavan said in his statement in the Legislative Assembly.

"Kerala Government gave a letter on Dec 2, 2008," Chavan said. Three names were recommended, including that of Thomas, he said.

Thomas was chief secretary of Government of Kerala in 2007. Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) had suggested three names - two retired officers and one serving - for the post of CVC.

Opposition has been holding Chavan responsible for the fiasco over the appointment of Thomas as the CVC and demanding his resignation on the issue.
