Campaign against domestic violence in Delhi

New Delhi, Feb 19 (ANI): Voicing her concern against domestic violence, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit on Saturday called for the emancipation of women, as she sked the general populace to value Indian women and keep them safe.

Attending an event here today to spread awareness about domestic violence, Dikshit said: "When we will ring the bell in whole Delhi, it will spread awareness among people and they will realise that how they should keep their partner, whether it is their wife, daughter or sister, safe."

'Bell Bajao' (Ring the Bell) is a nationwide campaign against domestic violence, which was launched in August 2008.

The campaign encourages people to pay attention and take action against domestic violence in their neighborhood.

Commenting on the declining sex ratio of girls in Delhi, Dikshit said though the ratio has improved, it is still not up to the mark, and the government would continue with its campaigns against female foeticide.

"We should try and find out the actual reasons that why women are treated badly in the society. We will have to find out the deep-rooted reasons. We should continue with the campaigns but should also find out the reasons behind the problem," said Dikshit.

Female foeticide remains to be a key issue of concern and the main reason for the skewed sex ratio in the country, which, in turn, is the reason behind various crimes against women.

According to official data, the current sex ratio of Haryana is approximately 861 females per 1,000 males, while Kerala has the highest sex ratio in India with 1058 females per 1,000 males. (ANI)
