Birdflu in Tripura, culling begins

Agartala, Feb 18: At least 3000 poultry, including chicken and ducks, were Friday culled in a state-owned poultry and within its three km radius here following outbreak of birdflu in Tripura.

State Animal Resource minister Aghor Debbarma told newsmen over two thousand chicken and ducks have died in the area since Feb 3 last. The blood samples of some of them which were sent to Regional Animal Diseases Diagnostic Centre in Kolkata tested positive for H5N1 virus.

The administration has also banned selling of any poultry in and around R K Nagar Poultry, six km from here.

Avian influenza was first reported from Kamalpur, a subdivision in Dhalai district bordering Moulavi bazar district of neighbouring Bangladesh in Apr 2008.

PFA concerned over recovery of five cubs from Mizoram villagers

Aizawl, Jan 10: The Mizoram unit of People For Animals (PFA) has expressed concern over the recovery of five cubs from villagers' possession, who claimed that their mother had failed to tend them. The cubs were recovered by jhum farmers in Sailulak village on January 7 and the villagers subsequently brought the cubs to Aizawl, to be kept under the care of the PFA.
