At Rs 5/kg, Delhi onions bring tears to farmers

Onions
New Delhi, Jan 25: Prices of onions have come down to Rs 5-20 per kg in wholesale markets of Delhi on Tuesday, Jan 25, as the supply was improved. But retailers were still selling the key vegetable at Rs 40 per Kg.

Wholesale traders said that it will take a few days for retail sellers to sell onions at reduced prices. The onion crisis is getting solved, said Delhi Agricultural Marketing Board Chairman Brahm Yadav. He added that the new Food Minister K V Thomas took initiative to bring down the onion prices.

"There is no shortage in supply of onions in the Azadpu rmarket now, as a result of which the price has gone down significantly," Yadav added.

However, farmers in Nashik of Maharashtra are angry with the sharp decline in the wholesale price of onions. They held a protest in front of Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee''s (APMC) offices in Nashik yesterday.

Police had to resort to a mild cane-charge to deal with the protesting farmers.
